The 30-second start
Do this before you try to be productive. Physical first. The task second.
-
1
Write the one task on paper or in Ascend
One. If you cannot pick, pick the smallest.
-
2
Silence one distraction
Phone in another room, or Slack paused. One is enough.
-
3
Open the file
The start is the open. The masterpiece can wait.
Why this task is hard
Work is a bundle of identities: competent, available, not-behind. Starting means risking a less flattering version. So you tidy, research, or hover at the edge of Slack instead of entering the one task that would actually move the day.
Context switching makes the first deep block feel like a cliff.
Work also arrives as a bundle of tasks with no doorway. "Catch up" is not a start. Neither is "be productive." The brain needs one file, one thread, one sentence.
What usually makes it worse
A to-do list of 50 with no next action. Checking messages "just to clear the decks," which restocks the decks. Waiting for a perfect two-hour window that workdays do not contain.
Organizing the desktop. Reading about productivity. Attending to urgent small things to avoid the important vague one. Busy is not entered.
The 2-minute version
If you have more in the tank, run a Focus Sprint: 10 minutes on, 2 minutes off, three rounds. The sprint is a container so you do not have to feel like working. You only have to enter the container.
If two minutes is all you have, that is still work started. Close the file on purpose so tomorrow opens the same door instead of a new negotiation.
What to do after you start
The start is the hard part. After you have touched the task for thirty seconds or two minutes, you get to choose. Stop if your body says stop. Continue if something unlocked. Both count. Stopping after an honest start is not the same as never beginning. You have evidence now: you can enter the task. That evidence matters more than finishing the whole thing in one sitting.
A lot of people blow the win by immediately planning a better system. Resist that for today. Write down what you did. Close the tab or leave the room. Tomorrow, do not negotiate from zero again. Stand up, water, shoes, two minutes of the same task. Momentum is a chain of starts, not one heroic afternoon. Import Start Anyway if you want that chain waiting instead of rebuilding it in the freeze every morning.

FAQ
What if I still cannot start work?
Shrink the start again. Stand up, drink water, or open the thing for ten seconds. The plan is allowed to be smaller than your pride wants.
Is Ascend an ADHD productivity app?
No. Ascend is for people who know what to do but cannot start. The goal is one tiny action, then continuing after missed days without shame. It is not a diagnosis tool or a treatment.
Is this medical advice?
No. Ascend is a habit app. If you need clinical support for ADHD or mental health, talk to a qualified professional.
What happens if I miss a few days?
You continue. Rescue Mode and Recover From a Bad Day are built so a gap does not reset your momentum or send you into a shame spiral.
